Hello crazy moms with dark eye circles because you haven’t had a good night sleep ever since your entire world came right into your arms 🙂
Today I am going to talk about how I started my little one with his first foods and how I dealt with some basic troubles that come up with starting foods.
My little one was on exclusive breastfeed since he was 4 months. I had planned to start his proper foods when he was a complete 6 months old. But this also meant that I just couldn’t start him with a large amount of meal right from day one. So instead, Here is what I did, step by step.
Step 1 : Introduction.
When he was 5 months old, I started him with just one to two tablespoon of baby food or cerelac for his entire day. It could be anything from pureed foods, cerelac, mashed fruits or vegetables.
Step 2 : Taste development.
As I started to introduce foods to him, I started looking for signs that showed what he liked best. I kept repeating the same food each day to develop his taste for the foods I wanted him to eat as a must – Banana, cerelac, rice, lentils, chicken and potato.
Step 3 : Balance between sweet and savory.
I heard from so many moms that their kids would only eat sweet or would only eat savory. I did not want my child to favor just one. I wanted him to have both so I would make sure if he had a sweet food first then he would have a savory for next. This made sure he was getting both the tastes developed.
Step 4 : No force feeding.
When my little one refused for any specific food or refused after having a few bites, I stopped immediately. I did not force any food or any bites. This made sure that he did not develop any negative memories with his food. This particular step helped me so much that he loves eating food now instead of becoming cranky at the sight of food.
Step 5 : Increasing the amounts each day.
Every few days, I increased the quantity of his food. This step is mostly a game of trials and errors. Try increasing amounts, look where he is gagging or where he is stopping then note the quantity for next time. So by the time he was 5 & 1/2 months old, he was successfully eating about 2 once of puree food.
Step 6 : Complete meals at age 6 months.
As I kept increasing his quantity of food, I also kept a close look at his daily poop activity (yeah yeah fun times 🙂 ), gas trouble, throwing up and at which point his stomach was full. By age of 6, he had his fixed amount of food, he was happily eating about 5 ounces of puree food.
This gradual introduction resulted in so many benefits. He was happily eating. I did not have to struggle with picky eating. He did not become fussy at the sight of food. He loved eating. He would show hints of wanting food or wanting more…
So moms, that’s how I did it.. How did you do it?
